THE RIGHTWAYUP FIELD NOTES

How automatic video orientation works

A suggestion you can check, with your media kept local.

RightWayUp uses the open Pico model from ORTUS AI to estimate which direction looks upright. The model runs in your browser.

Photos and videos use different samples

A photo supplies one image. A video supplies frames near 10, 50, and 90 percent of its duration. The tool seeks agreement between confident samples before it changes the rotation.

Why can detection be uncertain?

Abstract images, close-ups, underwater footage, and scenes without a clear top can confuse an orientation model. A video can contain shots with different orientations. The tool can leave the rotation unchanged when its samples disagree.

The preview remains your decision

Check the suggested angle. Use the manual buttons if the result looks wrong. The tool applies quarter turns to the whole file. It does not level a horizon, stabilize a camera, or correct each shot separately.

What downloads on first use?

The browser downloads a model of about 23 MB and its inference runtime. The total cold download is about 38 MB. Later use can reuse the browser cache. Your images do not travel back with those requests.

Open technology

The detector uses ORTUS AI RightWayUp, which has an Apache 2.0 license. This website is an independent service. Browser resizing can differ from Python. We do not claim the Python package's published accuracy for this implementation.
